The Jane Austen Summer Program (JASP) is pleased to announce that applications are open for our teacher scholarships to attend our annual four-day symposium June 11-14 in Greensburg, PA.

Designed to appeal to an inclusive audience of Austen fans, welcoming scholars, middle and

high school educators, graduate and undergraduate students, and Austen enthusiasts alike, this year's program -- "Pride, Prejudice, and the Pursuit of Happiness" -- will explore topics that connect Austen's beloved novel Pride and Prejudice to the revolutionary context in which it was written. Our program coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The scholarship program is open to all current middle and high school teachers in the United States who want to learn more about incorporating Jane Austen and innovative practices in their curriculum. Spend your JASP conference gathering ideas on how to incorporate older texts, historic periods, close reading, and experiential education into your curriculum. Special teacher-focused panels and events also provide a chance to network with other like-minded educators, leading to lasting collaboration.

"I have seen so many of my seniors blossom as readers and find joy in literature through Austen. I know firsthand that students of all backgrounds can and do relate to Austen’s work, and teaching in this context has made me appreciate her craft in a new light."- Adrian Demopulos, JASP 2023 Teacher Scholar

The essay prompt asks teacher applicants to explore how Austen’s works develop ideas related to Elizabeth Bennet’s independence, with attention to questions of personal freedom, social expectations, and the pursuit of happiness.

If you are interested in applying for a JASP teacher scholarship, please fill out the application online at janeaustensummer.org/scholarships. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 11, and winners will be announced the week of May 18. We look forward to celebrating your professional commitment to education and love of Jane Austen together!

The JASP 2026 teacher scholarship essay contest is open to all current 6-12 teachers in the United States. Winners will receive free registration to JASP 2026 (a $285 value) and an awards meal. The deadline to apply is 11:59 PM ET on Monday, May 11, 2026.
