Happy Austen-inspired Halloween!

Writer: Jennifer AbellaJennifer Abella

Halloween is a few days away and if you’re going to (or chaperoning) a Halloween party or need to take the kids trick-or-treating — or just need something to wear while you hand out candy — we’ve got a few last-minute ideas for you.

If you have Regency dress already …

… why not put it to good use with these twists?

PPZ

Posh Regency lady: With your fancy dress on, you could be anyone you want to be. Need a little creative push? Let this Regency name generator help.

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: Who wouldn’t want to be a sword-wielding Lizzy Bennet? Wear your finest Regency dress and fight off the hordes with a plastic sword. Or go all-out with makeup to be one of the undead.

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters: In this book, Willoughby saves Marianne from an octopus, so you could carry a plush 8-tentacled friend — or attach a few aquatic-themed bath toys to your dress for the night.

pug

Mrs. Bertram: Carry a plush pug with you. Everywhere.

Jane Austen: Find yourself a feather and paper and imagine being the author herself.

Miss Bates:  Never. Stop. Talking.

If you don’t have a dress:

Modern Jane Bennet: Got a couple of ModCloth or retro dresses in your closet? You could be fashion-forward Jane Bennet from “Lizzie Bennet Diaries” — and if you’ve got long hair, you can’t go wrong with Jane’s milkmaid braids.

Frankie Price: Bust out your favorite woolly sweater and you’ll basically be this comfortable-in-her-own-skin-yet introvert Frankie Price from “From Mansfield With Love.”

More Halloween fun

For history: Check out the Jane Austen Centre’s post about fall traditions in the Regency era.

For fun: Check out this video about other failed literary/horrors mashups a la “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” and “Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters” such as, ahem, “Wolfmansfield Park.” (Hat tip to Terri O’Quin for the video!)
