Welcome back to the Sense and Sensibility vlog series, dear readers! My co-hosts and I hope you enjoy this episode breaking down the historical meanings of the words "sense" and "sensibility," as well as their current connotations. Highlights of the video include insight into Austen's respective "praise" and "punishment" of sense vs. sensibility in the novel, the mid-eighteenth-century cultural "cult of sensibility," and where we see aspects of sense and sensibility manifesting in our own lives and personalities today. Spoiler alert—Maizie is an Elinor, Na'dayah is a Marianne, and Sarah falls somewhere in between!
If you missed last week's video on suitors and romance in Sense and Sensibility, you can check it out here on JASP's YouTube channel. We'll see you again next Tuesday, May 13, with an episode discussing art, literature, and music in the novel. Happy viewing!
