Upcoming Virtual Events: Persuasion Festival at Jane Austen's House


Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, England will be hosting their Persuasion festival from September 12- 21. Fortunately for those of us outside of the UK some of the festival events will be virtual! These events are also recorded to watch again later. All ticket holders receive a link to the recording after the event.

1. Virtual 'Persuasion' Tour

Date and Time: Sunday, September 14, 2025 7-8 PM BST/2-3 PM ET

This virtual tour uses objects from the Jane Austen's House collection and the House itself to examine and celebrate Austen's autumnal novel, Persuasion. Attendees will discover the rooms where Austen wrote Persuasion in 1815-1816. Grab your favorite autumn beverage and examine Persuasion in a new way!



2. Virtual Talk: Jane Austen's Garden

Date and Time: Tuesday, September 16, 2025 8-9 PM BST/3-4 PM EDT

Author Molly Williams discusses her book, Jane Austen's Garden: A Botanical Tour Of The Classic Novels, alongside illustrator Jessica Roux. This moderated Q&A will explore the intersection of literature and horticulture. Attendees will learn about how Austen's world was shaped by the gardens of her time.



3. Virtual Talk: Jane Austen's Development As A Writer

Date and Time: Thursday, September 18, 2025 8-9 PM BST/3-4 PM EDT

Join acclaimed scholar Collins Hemingway as he talks about Austen's novels and unpublished manuscripts, exploring how her craft as a novelist evolved throughout her two decades of writing. Hemingway discusses the structural issues in Northanger Abbey, the origin of Sense and Sensibility as an epistolary novel, and Austen's stylistic fresh start in Pride and Prejudice. Attendees will also explore how Austen delves into the minds of her characters in the

mature Chawton novels, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion.
