2015 Jane Austen Essay contest announced! High School, Undergraduate, and Graduate Student prizes!

2015 Essay Contest Under Way

Although the submission deadline for the 2015 JASNA Essay Contest is May 15, it’s not too early for students to start thinking about participating. The topic for 2015 was announced a few weeks ago at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal, and we invite high school, college, and graduate school students who enjoy writing and reading Jane Austen to join in the fun.

Essay Topic: In keeping with the theme of the 2015 Annual General Meeting, “Living in Jane Austen’s World,” JASNA is looking for short essays on the following topic:

Examine a single Jane Austen novel or several and show different ways characters engage with their culture, views, mores, or living conditions. How does participation in their world affect each character’s development? You might look at how a character approaches material culture, physical or emotional space, interpersonal relations, social class, wealth, or gender. You may consider elements of Jane Austen’s world that have inherently negative or positive influences on characters and events in the novels.

Attention Teachers:  Print or download our poster to display in your classroom or distribute to students. The deadline for entries is May 15, 2015.

Awards:  Judges will select first-, second-, and third-place winners in each of the three student divisions. Winners will receive cash scholarships of $1,000 (first), $500 (second), and $250 (third); one-year free membership in JASNA for themselves and their mentors; and more. First-place winners will also be offered complimentary registration and two nights’ lodging for the 2015 JASNA Annual General Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.
